list archives, notice how MANY of the regular posters to this list have a stereotypical shpeil that they repeat again and again over many years with only slight permutations. I, myself have themes that I acknowledge returning to or ideas I wish to promote but I think there is a pretty strong variety in what I post.

One of our biggest problems is that we are looking for what we WANT, not for what is actually there. Ie, we want an AI to solve the technical and logistical problems of our deviant fantasies... [looks around sheepishly] uh... uh... Awkward... Anyway, what we actually have is basically a microcontroller barely capable of waving the limbs of a monkey.

The horrible truth of the matter is that what we call intelligence only actually exists in the healthiest of brains out there, only on a good day... In almost all cases, brains do everything possible to be as lazy as possible and simply express trained motor commands. The posts on this list that have come to be so repetitive are examples of this lazyness, and the strong tenency to habitual behaviors.

So, on the grand scale, from Rod Serling to Triggly Puff, the overwhelming majority out there is distressingly close to Triggly Puff!

Now when the educational system works (major counterfactual), the normal human is trainable enough that he can pratice the culture and basically maintain a healthy society. (what happens when the educational system intentionally miss-educates the people is left as an excersise for the reader).

As we understand biology, our brains are made of cells, about 1/10th of which are actually neurons, the others are gleal cells which may or may not contribute to cognition, the science is somewhat fuzzy on that regard. These neurons operate, on first approximation, independently, and will continue to operate when isolated or in the case if injury.

There do exist neural circuits consisting of repeating patterns of dozens or hundreds of neurons with an apparent high level functional role. There also exists high-level signals, namely brain waves, that are produced, in part, by neural circuits which look suspiciously like a clock oscillator, and indeed, can be emulated by medical devices to replace impaired functionality and successfully treat a number of disorders. -- see "deep brain stimulation" for more information.

So we have a variety of neural circuits with their respective functions and we have global (with respect to the brain) signals which serve to synchronize these functions and help produce a functioning monkey-controller.

So, what emerges is a heirarchical order of things which must be present and well functioning in order to be fully sapient and capable of original thought. At any stage you are probably free to swap one thing for another within it's basic requirements. But to get to the end goal, the entire system must be present, functioning, and well tuned for it to function at the Rod Serling level of performance.

The point is that in order to reach human level intelligence, we must first get all the layers of human stupidity working first!! =P

Before mashing send, lets see if we can say anything useful about what that actually means.

Consider all of the things you do habitually. Driving to the grocery store is an excellent example because, on the surface, it requires complex sensory-motor control sequences. But people who have been doing it for years basically do it mindlessly, even the environmental feedback is part of the habbit and doesn't even really trigger a conscious response unless it rises to a certain level of surprise or perceived danger.

The neural science texts talk about how neural circuits contribute to the congnitive capabilities. This is an important perspective because we are talking about what kind of capabilities are reqired to perform our routine habitual behaviors, which can range from everything from complex sensorymotor tasks to phrases we tend to use in conversation, etc.

The trick is that the sexy parts of intelligence and cognition are built of and on top of these more mindless mental processes.

Deep learning systems are an attempt to solve this. It is true that deep learning has produced some tantalizing results but I think that current techniques have hit the wall in terms of improving performance and that it is time to take lessons learned and try again. =\

Anyway, I'd have to do about a month and a half of work to say something about deep learning properly. I can't even install TensorFlow on my machine here due to software stupidity. =(

oh well, not enough sleep, probably am using terrible grammar, time to hit send..
