I really don't get what that other pinhead on the list is talking about with his 4 column chart with computer chips in the 3rd column...

If you want to talk about doing science on <zombie voice> brainz brains..... </zombie voice>

Look at the gdmf Cerebellum.

It has two dominant cell species:

Granule cells?? -- Ok, a dorky little cell with an axion that shoots out to the cerebellar cortex and extends out horizontally in two directions and creates what are called parallel fibres:

The other kind of cell is the Purkinje Cell, these are the largest type of cell found in the brain, they *typically* have around 150,000 synapses, (NOT A TYPO!!!)?? There are around 4 million of these suckers in the cerebellum (iinm), or at least a number on that order of magnitude. This is not something that you will want to simulate in great detail. The stupid uploaders seem to be crazy enough to want to try, but it is not something you want to do to get smarts.

So what does the cerebellum do??? It looks kinda like a player piano, where you can think of granule cells as the scroll and the purkinge cells as the notes. But actually what it seems to be doing at a high level is basically calculus.

So what does the cerebellum do? -> a crude, buggy form of calculus according to a number of authors and the types of deficits shown by patients with cerebellar lesions. -- they try to reach for something but fail to do the calculus required to sucessfully stop the hand (which has mass and inertia) at the intended target.

Well, we can math, or at least some of us... So therefore we only need to encode in all the variables that we need to calculus (both physical and higher cognitive functions), and then use some mathematically sound, computationally feasible, way of doing it to far greater precision than possible in biology, and then decode the output back to neural impulses...

So therefore by doing math instead of detailed emulation, we can probably shave 10 years of hardware development off what we need to reach human equivalency, and years more off what the uploaders will probably need.
