I was warming up to re-hash my own AGI proposals again but realized I was starting to sound like the "buddy can you spare a quadrillion" guy...

Well, the first approach that Really Should Work is to just build a brain:
https://www.humanbrainproject.eu/en/brain-simulation/

The problem is that, according to a number of sources, 7nm is the end of the line as far as power and performance scaling for the current technological paradigm. There are plans to move to 5nm then 3nm which should reduce costs and improve density. Unless someone pulls a rabbit out of the hat, hardware isn't going to save us.

Furthermore, the HBP is a science project. It's model is unlikely ever to be fast enough for practical use, even though it will probably be considerably faster than what the uploaders will be wanting. =P?? ( in case it has been forgotten, I'm a legendary anti-uploading troll... )

I tried to get some numbers but couldn't find anything at a quick glance, still the site is worth exploring tho.

Genetic algorithms can work, given sufficient time and supercomputers, it WILL work...

Take a VR environment engineered to be AGI complete that rewards agents to the extent that they exhibit AGI level behaviors. The evolvable matrix of each agent can be constrained to just the mental faculties so there won't be selection based on physical traits. Each agent will need to have significant AGI and compute resources. The actual evolving language will also have to be fairly powerful and expressive to have a reasonable probability of including the AGI solution.

This approach probably will work given enough time and effort, it can be accelerated somewhat by manually tweaking agents based on other research from time to time. But still, it'll probably be to expensive and time consuming to be acceptable. The resulting design will then have to be reverse-engineered just like the brain but at least 100% of the information will be available, where we only have fuzzy glimpses of some parts of the brain.

The approach I strongly advocate is to build everything you can and then hack the rest. So go ahead and create a high resolution VR simualtion, with a high resolution virtual embodyment with, as best you can, a functionally equivalent human nervous system. Feel free to use high level techniques to emulate the basic function of thousands of neurons. The point of the venture is to get the things you will eventually need anyway working so that you can begin to narrow down what you need to solve.

Ofcourse, if you REALLY want AGI, what you need to do is get your hands on the Necronomicon. In it, you will find the secret ritual for summoning Cthulhu.

??Cthulhu, understandably, is quite annoyed at being summoned so make sure you have offerings of beef and pineapple to appease him. When he, grudgingly agrees to spare your life he will return to his own dimension. This is your chance! Grab one of his tentacles to get a ride into his own dimension. Space and time are a bit weird there but you should do OK if you focus on the color green and try to move towards it. This is because next you need a leprichaun.

Now you don't want his gold, you need him to sell you his copy of the records of the estates of the seven elder houses. He will probably let this go for only one or two gold coins because he doesn't know what a treasure he has. You need these records to figure out where the Stones of the Arcanum ended up. These stones are very ancient and have been passed around the long fallen seven great houses of the galactic order.

The realms of these houses are now divided among ten kingdoms, you need to figure out which ones you need to visit. Now, rightfully, these should be treated as national treausures such as the Tesseract, or Colnel Sander's recipe. Instead they have often been substituted with prettier stones with fewer flaws. The arcanum stones resemble star saphires and rubies but their structures are far more elaborate. So you probably won't have to break into the deepest layers of the national treasuries to get them, they'll probably be in one of the side vaults as something valuable but ultimately unimportant. You can recognize them with polarized lenses though, such as 3D movie glasses because the pattern from each angle will be quite distinct and different from any other kind of stone.

Once you have collected them, grab your bath towel and hitchhike to the constellation Taurus. In the Pleadies star cluster there is a rogue planet there's a stone monument like stonehenge that nobody can quite say what it is for.???? Each of the seven cardnal stones will line up with the stars in the cluster once every forty three earth days as the planet rotates. On that day, place each of the seven stones in the correct cardnal stone and wait for the beams of light to converge.

When this happens, the light from the stars will be modulated by the facets in the stones and will form a hologram above the altar. The Arcanum itself is said to be simultaneously beautiful and awful at the same time. Looking at it for more than a few minutes will almost certainly drive you mad or cause you to pass out. But, if you are smart enough, and well studied enough, you just might be able to withstand the arcanum. If you are still awake and sane after three hours, you will probably have reached the twelfth stage of enlightenment and programming AI on a computer will be utterly trivial to you now.
