Those who don' t understand, criticize most vehemently. A sobering thought then; if we cannot even make our living habitat a safe place for all of humankind, why should "we" bother trying to invent artificial life? We barely live, as it is. A rhetorical question at best. Some of us have excellent reasons for doing what we do.

I haven't gotten there yet but neither has anyone else on the planet, on this list or in any big tech company or gov't agency etc. I'm pretty psyched that this year we (i.e. the SingularityNET/OpenCog team) have gotten OpenCog's probabilistic logic engine to start doing some simple cases of "learning how to reason better" (recognizing surprising patterns in reasoning histories, which can then be used to guide ongoing reasoning) -- I think this sort of meta-inference is going to be very key to AGI. We've also made some interesting progress on getting deep neural models for vision to work together with symbolic reasoning and pattern mining. Have also been pushing on more infrastructural stuff, e.g. SingularityNET platform for coordinating the combined/interactive activity of a bunch of different AI agents, in a decentralized way w/o any central controller... this is not AGI per se but I think will help in terms of creating the conditions for emergence of AGI from some AGI-ish components (like OpenCog-based meta-inference agents) and some more narrow-AI-ish components working together...
