Knowledge of science and technology doesn't progress evenly across society. 
There are local minima and maxima. Some people can be deceived with scientific 
"magic" or tricks of deception unknown to the observer.

Like the Aztec leaders predicting eclipses and claiming to have magic powers... 
or making water boil steam and freeze at the same time (triple point), or 
projecting directed sound across distances to whisper in someone's ear... or 
using artificial consciousness to perform more efficient compression :)
