I don't think this is a trait we want in machines that are supposed to serve us. The goal is not runaway reproduction.


The thing is: memes. It isn't just genes that have copies made of
them. Culturally-transmitted ideas do much the same thing. Instead
of competing for food, they compete for attention. Memes don't just
live and reproduce inside human heads. They have colonized computer
networks as well. A machine on a network can copy ideas faster and
better than a human being can. It isn't a case of not building
survival drives into machines. Survival drives are already there.
If you don't want them, you have to figure out how to get rid of
them - and good luck with that.
