Boston Dynamics and Tesla are solving the robotics problem. As for goals,
that's not really the problem we want to solve. We don't want to give AGI
the same goals as humans. We give AGI tasks to perform and also specify the
search space. This is the safe and useful way to get things done. The
general problem of maximizing utility is not computable.

Humans are not utility maximizers, even if it seems like we are. The effect
of a reinforcement signal on the human brain is to change the frequency of
recent actions, which is not the same thing as seeking or avoiding the
signal. If it were, your desire to use drugs would not depend on having
used them previously.

As another example, nausea is not a general purpose negative signal, but
rather has the effect of reducing your appetite for foods you ate recently.
Evolution is not a general purpose learner either, which is why we don't
have wheels.

This is why we don't need to worry about an unfriendly singularity, like
the one Vernor Vinge predicted by 2023.
