The Northwest AGI Forum is pleased to welcome a presentation by Hugo
Latapie (bio follows synopsis)

There is a growing awareness in industry, academia, and even ML/DL
aficionados that something more may be needed. Creating ever bigger DL
models may not be the path to solve the types of problems humanity
needs solved ASAP, such as autonomous X where X = driving, networks,
organizations, robots, conservation, food production, etc.

The idea of making systems that are more human-like from an
intelligence standpoint sounds great until we reflect a bit on the
downsides of human intelligence which are clearly visible all around
us.

We'll discuss a formalism that helps us define the positive aspects of
human intelligence we would like to carry forward in our future
machines and perhaps even ourselves. We will start with a review of
Korzybski's engineering definition of man versus other forms of life
which can be used to predict aspects of humanity and also understand
some of the problems to be avoided in human-like intelligences.

ABOUT HUGO LATAPIE

Hugo Latapie has over 20 years experience designing and implementing
mission critical systems for the defense, medical, and
telecommunications industries. His network database work formed the
basis for the first semantic network based applications for health
care. His focus is hands-on “surgical team” methodology for rapid
implementation of high value products incorporating leading-edge
technologies. He is experienced in large-scale distributed systems,
cryptography, embedded systems, database engine development, compiler
design, digital television, machine learning, deep learning, symbolic
AI, neurosymbolic systems. He was keynote speaker at the AGI 2019
conference http://agi-conf.org/2019/ and IWSSL (International Workshop
on Self Supervised Learning) 2022 for his work on commercial
neurosymbolic systems. He has over 70 issued and pending patents.
