When an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) answers a who-what-when-where
question posed by a human user, the auditory input

module activates the concepts behind the words in a question such as "Who
reads books?" The interrogative pronoun "who" is set to a low activation
while the verb "reads" and the noun "books" receive a modest activation.
Then the

module spreads activation sideways from the direct-object noun "books" to
any known verbs associated with "books," such as "write" or "sell" or
"publish" or "read." Thus the concept of the verb "reads" obtains extra
activation from two sources: the input of the verb "reads" and the sideways
activation spreading from the object "books." Although SpreadAct activates
many known subjects of the concept "reads," such as readers of signs or
letters or books, an AGI responding to the question "Who reads books?" will
select any extra-activated subject-noun to think up a response such as
"Students read books." If the human user persists in asking "Who else
reads books?" the AGI will pass over its recently issued and now
de-activated response to think up a new response such as "Reviewers read
books."
