I don't know what to make of this.
Normally I consider myself a monist but if I willfully ignored potential
evidence, I'd be an idiot. =\
What this seems to be saying is that some people may have access to a
second mental substrate that exists "outside of the matrix" or adjacent
to The Simulation. The organic brain, as conventionally understood, may
or may not be capable of consciousness on its own. In all normal people,
the bulk of thought is done by the brain but if it is injured (or
absent!) in a patient with access to this seperate external brain, the
external brain will take over. The external brain seems to have a high
IQ (potentially more but limited by human culture), and is able to
perform most of the functions of an organic brain but has greatly
reduced emotional response. But the external brain is invulnerable to
most things in the human realm and can associate with a fresh young body
on death, though the rate of this occouring seems to be on the order of
one in hundreds of thousands or worse.
I don't know.
I think AGI research can continue conventionally but the above
hypothesis must be strongly addressed before contemplating human
enhancement or mind uploading.
