On the Deer Hunter movie causing about 30 suicides. This is focusing on the wrong issue. In the US there are about 60,000 gun deaths per year, of which 60% are suicides. The suicide rate is twice as high for men as for women even though women make more attempts. The rate is higher in states with high rates of gun ownership, and high among police and military veterans. The reason, of course, is that most suicide attempts with guns succeed and other methods usually fail.
On the hardware complexity of AI. The most successful models in practice are neural networks. The brain has 6 x 10^14 synapses and an information rate of 10 bits per second. So that's on the order of 10 petaflops and draws about a megawatt of power. A common improvement is to use higher precision weights. A synapse has weight 1 or -1 and can only be turned on or off. Most LLMs use 16 bit weights, either FP16 or Bfloat16 with a 6 or 8 but exponent, sign but, and 7-9 mantissa bits. In my own work I use 20 bit weights with range -8 to 8, 2^-16 precision, and learning rates around 0.001. I think this is why the human brain has only 10^9 bits of memory and not 2 x 10^14 if we assume 0.3 bits per parameter like in a Hopfield net. This suggests that human level language modeling should be possible on a PC. The reason we don't do this with LLMs is that they are trained on 20 TB of text, which is 20,000 times the knowledge of one human, and human level language learning takes decades. To address your other points. 1. You don't have to believe my 1999 claim that all you need to pass the Turing test is text prediction. LLMs already proved it in 2023. 2. I didn't claim in 2008 that the hardware cost of AGI (automating human labor) would be $1 quadrillion. I claimed that would be the cost of collecting all human knowledge. I assumed that the hardware cost would be insignificant. That part was wrong. I did not anticipate that Moore's law would stall, and I should have. 3. I am aware that electrons don't move at near the speed of light like electrical signals do. The energy cost of changing a state rises with temperature (kT ln 2) because the binding energy has to be strong enough not to be destroyed by heat. It is still true that computing with atoms or molecules takes less energy than with electrons. 4. I showed the complexity of distributed storage in my 1998 thesis and ran simulations. In a connected graph, queries get exponentially closer to the target with each step, so there are log n steps and log n copies. This doesn't work for all kinds of data, only data that can be organized into an ontology, such as text or images. It doesn't work for Bitcoin transactions (which didn't exist at the time) because the compression distance measure is uniform for encrypted data or hashes that don't compress. 5. I argued in 2008 that the fastest way to collect all human knowledge would be to make all knowledge public. This would include queries, so it would be impossible to stalk you without you knowing exactly what they were doing. There would be no need for passwords because nobody could steal from you and keep it a secret. Obviously this did not happen. In 2008 there was no internet censorship, so I thought it could work. I also thought that AGI could be funded by ads or paying for promotion in a world where information has negative value and people compete for attention. Again this did not happen. In 2008 the amount of information you could suck off the Internet was larger than today because all of it was free. Now almost everything is pay walled. My model also failed because trust favors centralization. We trust Amazon and Google over millions of small businesses that we don't know anything about. We trust them to do all the surveillance, putting microphones in our homes, GPS in our pockets, reading our email and texts, and backing up all our data and passwords. I don't see how you can solve this with zero knowledge proofs beyond what I'm doing. I already use digitally signed messages in my protocol, which is a proof that you know a private key without revealing it. It proves you know who sent the messages, but you need more than that. Anyway, I'm not flattering myself. I admit some of my predictions were wrong. -- Matt Mahoney, [email protected] On Wed, Aug 5, 2026, 9:18 AM Quan Tesla <[email protected]> wrote: > An essay is an opinion.
