That's a big "unless" -- since indeed, many of us are explicitly trying to
program AGIs that control humanoid robots or video game agents

I think it will be valuable for AGIs to relate to humans well and empathize
with us, and I think this will be easier for them if they have a somewhat
humanlike existence, at least as a significant portion of their
experience...

I agree they are not necessary, but I think that they will be valuable.  An
AGI that can participate in the everyday human world will have many uses
that an AGI existing in some other way would not.  And it would be able to
empathize with us more directly.

I can see an "intelligent discussion forum" eventually becoming an AGI, and
I can also see a possibility where a single AGI mind spans both online
"embodiments" like discussion fora, and robotic and game-AI humanoid
embodiments.. and others...

One-mind/one-body will soon be a thing of the past ;)
