Ya Ben, I really respect that, finishing Grad school and all. So many years of conformity, it must have been tough.
If I had the will power I likely would have also. Unfortunately due to a variety of variables, I couldn't finish even my undergrad degree. However I do have a combination of magic and the government to support my research endeavors, so it works out okay. I sometimes wonder if someone will publish some Academic paper, claiming my ideas, and get all the credit for it. Though I hope that wont happen, especially since I'm documenting my projects quite thoroughly. Once when I was an undergrad, I asked about publishing a paper, and they told me that I had to become some Phd's apprentice or something :-|, in order to even be eligible. I don't know how true that is, but perhaps it is, though it means that lay people can't really publish stuff in scientific journals. Other than that, I also don't like how the journals often charge people money in order to gain access to their information. It's a proprietary practice which I greatly disapprove of, and so have never actually bought one. Maybe one day, there will be Open Science, which allows the participation of any being that has knowledge to contribute, (even if they didn't spend tens of thousands and years of their lives apprenticing.) along with Open Studies, where people can participate in a study by doing an experiment at home and posting results, and Open Journals, that actually share the information that science has accumulated. Until that happens, academic science is little better than a guild or secret society. I rather be a part of a free and open source society. Who knows, maybe one day, open science will be the norm.
