Ben, did you notice that YOU (as the leader of AGI) are now at the top of the short-list of the four most likely ways to kill off the entire human race? This apparent threat can be delayed, probably for years, for less than a dollar, depending on the caliber of the bullet they select. It won't take a government assassin - there are plenty enough crazies around to do the job. One of the Terminator movies even addressed the ethics of killing someone like YOU - the conclusion being that it is OK, unless the person can successfully be turned against their own creation to help destroy it. Got that - it might be hard to find a jury to convict someone who chooses to kill YOU!!! Ben, it would appear that your time is about up. Either you come up with a defensible way of making AGI safe, or the best governments that money can buy will probably make you Public Enemy #1. You might think about your future life at Guantanamo, or in a tiny cell at a maximum security facility, provided of course that someone doesn't kill you first. THIS IS NO JOKE. Everyone here is potentially at risk. AGI could easily be seen as the ULTIMATE terrorist weapon, and we already know what the government does with potential terrorists, most of whom have never harmed anyone, regardless of any evidence (or the lack thereof) of any crime having been committed. Then, where the government leaves off, there are always crazies to step in. Of course there are "better" scenarios, e.g. the government sweeping us all up, along with everyone else who has demonstrated ANY AGI-related skills, and throwing us all into a concentration camp. These camps already exist - all that is missing is US. This could all go sideways in a VERY bad way. Ben, you have been digging this hole for years, now how about building a ladder to get out and a shovel to fill it back in? You and your goddamn stupid (regardless of whether or not you are correct) publicly-made short-term predictions now threaten the personal safety and security of everyone on this forum, probably even INCLUDING ME. PLEASE don't be stupid and try to argue logically about this, because there is precious little logic in the operation of Homeland Security, their regular reports to the President, or the Secret Executive Orders that you will never see that the President might choose to make. What is needed here is an explanation as to how and why AGI can reliably be prevented from killing us all. You don't believe it will happen, and for very different reasons I don't believe it will happen. However, it only takes one man, the President, knowing far less than either of us knows, to believe that this is a real possibility, or even disbelieve it is a possibility but be under political pressure, for everyone reading this posting to lose their freedom. Note that this is all about perceptions and politics, and nothing at all about technological "reality". I believe that I could make a strong rational case that AGI is farther in our future than interstellar travel. However, with you (and others who haven't opened their eyes to see where this is leading) arguing against me, my comments would never make it to the president, and we could all be locked up as a result. If you think that such an explanation is impossible to produce, I believe your only rational action is to delete this list, wipe the drives that contain past postings, clear the membership lists, use Google to find anything you might have missed, and then hope and pray that you did enough to save all of our butts. Hopefully I am far enough removed from AGI Ground Zero to be let go with a Secrecy Order (Hint to future government reviewers), because I am NOT working on any pieces that might conceivably be a part of a future AGI running amok. If I receive such an order, this forum disappears, and Ben no longer answer his emails, I will know that the government has provided for the future housing for many of the people on this forum. I will either observe immediate concerted efforts on this forum to address this concern, or I will be dropping off of this forum. Maybe when the government sweeps everyone up, they will miss me. BTW, the **BEST** long-term scenario I can see is that the government makes AGI like child pornography - illegal to have anything at all to do with. The only legal studies of consciousness would be in direct connection with human thought, and there, like gynecology, there would probably be controls like licensing to guard it. Ben, you and a few others made this mess. It is now time to own it, and help clean it up.
