Fascinating article on 3d printing in Dec. New Scientist. We’ve all been sold the hype of how this technology will revolutionise the world – and how we’ll all be domestic manufacturers – and must invest a substantial chunk of our portfolio in these firms right away.
Actually, says the article, there are major limitations – 3-d printers can only print in 1 or 2 materials, they can’t manage more. And they’re still very slow. And of course all new technologies are limited – fabulous sometimes, but still limited – not the universal panacea they are so often depicted as. Can you think of any other new technologies, or would-be technologies, that may have been a little overhyped recently?
