I make no such claim. Self-replicating, autonomous nanotechnology is
probably the simplest method.

So am I. I prefer methods that don't cause human extinction. AGI
requires solving hard problems in language, vision, robotics, art, and
modeling human behavior. There might be solutions to such problems
that don't require petaflops, but 3 billion years of evolution, as
well as a $70 trillion per year incentive, have failed to find them.
Therefore I don't think you will either.

Because its competition is not one human brain, but all of
civilization. Without civilization, you will not produce anything
resembling AGI. If you are a genius, you might figure out on your own
that you can make a spear out of sticks and rocks and use it to hunt.
But that's unlikely. Most people learned this by watching others.

Yes, if you count all of the people before them that invented books,
agriculture, language, etc.

Yes they will, if you measure intelligence by widely accepted measures
of expected utility, such as dollars per hour.
