1. PhD student positions in Principles of Brain Computation, Graz, AUSTRIA
(DEADLINE: 24:03:2013)

We are inviting applications for Phd positions at the Graz University of

Technology (Faculty for Computer Science) for research on
        Principles of Brain Computation
in the Human Brain Project http://www.humanbrainproject.eu/ and in the

EU-Project BrainScaleS
http://brainscales.kip.uni-heidelberg.de/index.html
The Human Brain Project is expected to start on October 1, and our Lab

will lead research on principles of brain computation in this project. We

can employ Phd students already now for closely related work in the

BrainScales project (this project provides intermediate financing until

the beginning of the Human Brain Project).
The Phd students will investigate computational properties and learning

features of data-based models for cortical microcircuits, through computer

simulations and theoretical analysis. Excellent research skills, a genuine

interest in answering fundamental open questions about information

processing in the brain, and the capability to work in an

interdisciplinary research team are expected. Experience in programming,

computer simulations or data analysis will be helpful.
Applications are invited by students with a master degree in one of the

areas computer science (especially machine learning, software design,

large-scale simulations), physics, mathematics, statistics, and

computational neuroscience. Our doctoral program will lead to a Phd in

Computer Science.
Please send your CV, information about your grades, and a letter

describing your scientific interests and goals by March 24 to my assistant

Regina Heidinger:
                 [email protected]
It would be helpful if you could include names and email addresses of

referees, and pdf files of your master thesis and/or other publications.

4. PhD position in coalgebraic logics, Glasgow, SCOTLAND
(DEADLINE: 15:04:2013)

******************************************************************

*** PhD Position

***

*** Coalgebraic Logics for intelligent data access

***

*** Mathematically Structured Programming Group

*** University of Strathclyde

***

******************************************************************
Applications are invited for PhD study under the supervision of Dr

Clemens Kupke and Prof Neil Ghani in the area of coalgebra, category

theory and logic with a special focus on linking the coalgebraic theory

to applications in databases. The position is fully funded for EU

students and will last for 3 years.
The successful applicant will have a good degree or an MSc in

Mathematics or Computer Science or a related subject with a strong

Mathematics or Computer Science component. Ideally, they will also have

a strong, documented interest in doing research. Strong mathematical

background and problem-solving skills are essential.
The Mathematically Structured Programming Group's vision is to use

mathematics to understand the nature of computation, and to then turn

that understanding into the next generation of programming languages.

This reflects the symbiotic relationship between mathematics,

programming, and the design of programming languages --- any attempt to

sever this connection will diminish each component. In order to achieve

these research goals we mainly use ideas from category theory, logic,

type theory and functional programming. Besides Prof Neil Ghani and Dr

Clemens Kupke, the group consists of a number of internationally leading

researchers including Dr Patricia Johann, Dr Conor McBride and Dr Sam

Lindley as well as a number of PhD students.
The University of Strathclyde (http://www.strath.ac.uk) is located in

the heart of Glasgow, which Lonely Planet Travel Guides hail as "one of

Britain's largest, liveliest and most interesting cities"

(http://www.lonelyplanet.com/worldguide/scotland/glasgow/). Southern

Scotland provides a particularly stimulating environment for researchers

in theoretical computer science, with active groups in this area at

Heriot-Watt University, the University of Edinburgh, the University of

Glasgow, the University of St. Andrews, and the University of Strathclyde.
Anyone interested should contact Dr Clemens Kupke whose email address is

"clemens.kupke at strath.ac.uk" and outline their academic background.

Applications will be considered starting from 15 April 2013.

http://www.rug.nl/research/gradschool-philosophy/research-master/

At the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Groningen, we offer an

advanced Research Master?s program, entirely in English. Applications for

the 2013-2014 academic year are now welcome.
http://www.rug.nl/research/gradschool-philosophy/research-master/
The program covers all areas of strength of the Faculty, which include:

epistemology, logic, philosophy of science, argumentation, philosophy of

mind; ethics; political, social and cultural philosophy; history of

philosophy, especially Medieval, Renaissance and Early Modern. For a list

of current faculty, see here:

The program has two very attractive features from a practical point of

view:
Partial Funding as a TA. All students are given the opportunity to act as

Teaching Assistants (TA) at the undergraduate courses offered by the

Faculty, and receive a remuneration of around EUR 400 per month for their

work as TA?s. This means that all students in the program are offered

partial funding.
