Postdoctoral position available in machine learning

The computer science department at the University of California, San Diego

(UCSD) is looking for an outstanding postdoctoral scholar to do research

in basic and applied machine learning. The successful candidate will work

closely with Professor Charles Elkan on an interdisciplinary project

funded mainly by a gift from Intel. The funding is to support innovative

analyses of massive data collected by Intel and its partners concerning

how personal computers are used. This position is for an independent

individual who is enthusiastic about launching a world-class research

career. Applicants should have a strong record of high quality published

research in machine learning and/or related fields. They should be

motivated to be the main author of papers to be published at top venues

such as JMLR and PNAS. They should also have strong implementation skills

and be eager to develop well-engineered software for use by practitioners

and by other researchers. UCSD is a world center for research in machine

learning, and the successful applicant will have the opportunity to

collaborate with a wide range of other researchers. Taking initiatives and

working on other themes in addition to the Intel project will be

encouraged. Applicants with interests in probabilistic methods, neural

networks, computational social science, computational finance, and

computational biology are especially welcome. Applicants must possess a

doctorate in computer science or a related area. There are no restrictions

on citizenship, and applicants from leading universities outside the U.S.

are welcome. The starting date can be as soon as July 1, 2013. Assuming

strong performance, funding is expected to be available to extend the

position. The salary will be competitive and UCSD benefits are excellent.

Funds for professional travel will be available. Please send expressions

of interest and applications to Charles Elkan at
[email protected],

will start immediately and will continue until the opening is filled.

Leading applicants will be interviewed by video Skype and may be invited

to visit in person. UCSD is an equal opportunity employer with strong

commitments to diversity and excellence. These are links to more

3. LoPhisc: Master in Logic, Philosophy of Science & Epistemology, Paris, FRANCE

The Master LoPhisc in Logic, Philosophy of Science & Epistemology jointly

administered by Pantheon-Sorbonne University (Paris 1) and Paris-Sorbonne

University (Paris 4) is a 2-year graduate programme which provides

students with the opportunity to work in depth within a particular area of

the field, while acquiring advanced knowledge across the breadth of these

disciplines. The course welcomes students from a range of disciplines who

want to acquire a high level of competence in one of the areas of the

programme, as well as analytical, communication and research skills.

The LoPhiSC programme is set in a thriving research environment, with

outstanding research and teaching staff. Students will conduct research

and attend lectures mainly at the Sorbonne in Paris and at other

affiliated academic institutions in central Paris, which provide extra

learning opportunities in neighbouring fields such as cognitive science.

On completion of the programme, students will be in a position to begin

work on a PhD dissertation (a small number of doctoral scholarships are

available to outstanding students from the European Union). Graduates will

be also well positioned to complete their training in view of a variety of

careers involving a critical understanding of science, in education,

scientific journalism and web-based information, scientific administration

and policy-making, or expertise. Lectures and seminars are generally given

in French, although quite a lot of the required reading is in English.

Some initial command of French is thus necessary, but can be improved

along the way. If you are interested in the LoPhisc, please contact one of

the two directors: Max Kistler (Université Panthéon-Sorbonne / Paris 1)

([email protected]) Jean-Baptiste Rauzy (Université

Paris-Sorbonne / Paris 4) ([email protected]) To

obtain some information about the admission procedure, please click

here: Admission procedure Finally, an informal presentation of the Master

will take place on May 29th, from 2pm to 4pm, at the Maison de la

Recherche (28 rue Serpente, Paris 6th). Researchers teaching in the Master

as well as current and former students will be present and everybody's

welcome.
