CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Advances in Cognitive Systems Journal ----------------------------- 1. Postdoctoral Fellowship on Virtual Agents, Carnegie Mellon University, USA Postdoctoral Fellowship in the ArticuLab ========================================= Faculty Advisor: Dr. Justine Cassell, Charles H. Geschke Director, Human-Computer Interaction Institute The ArticuLab at Carnegie Mellon University has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. The ArticuLab is located in the School of Computer Science, which has 7 departments (including Robotics, ML, LTI, CSD, ISR, and the ETC). Current research in the ArticuLab addresses questions at the intersection of AI, computational linguistics, and human communication dynamics primarily through the development of Embodied Conversational Agents (ECAs). For example, lab projects include a culturally-sensitive virtual peer that scaffolds inquiry-based science talk, and agents that use verbal and non-verbal communicative behaviors to obtain sensitive information. We are about to embark on an exciting new collaboration with the Entertainment Technology Center at CMU to make these agents engaging over long periods of time! The postdoc will assist with development and evaluation of these ECAs, and should have a background in one or more of the following: computer science, HCI, ECAs, computational linguistics, graphics, educational technology, or HRI. Strong computational skills and experience with agent architectures (e.g. SmartBody, ECAT, NUMACK) and/or 3D environments (e.g. Unity, Panda3D, etc.) is desirable. The research focus can adapt to the candidate’s interests. However, main goals include development of new agent architectures that support social interaction, improving the agents’ behavior models with machine learning, integrating sensors to automatically detect and produce non-verbal behaviors, and developing new paradigms to allow children to author and control agents. Duties may include leading and executing the development of new technologies, analysis of data, and scientific publication. The ideal candidate will quickly learn new skills, and will work well in a team of undergrad and graduate students, faculty, and staff in a fast-paced research environment. The candidate must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to take a leadership role in mentoring students, maintaining relationships with local funders and colleagues, and participating in writing grants to support future work. Postdocs receive excellent mentoring from the faculty advisor as well as experience in overseeing all aspects of research. Previous postdocs have gone on to faculty positions in first-rate universities. The position will open immediately, for one year with possibility of renewal. If interested, please send a CV, a brief statement explaining the nature of your interest and relevant experience, and names and contact information for at least three references, to: Dr. Amy Ogan [email protected] ******************************************************** 2. Postdoctoral position (2y) in set theory, Torino, ITALY (DEADLINE: 28:05:2013) TWO YEARS POSTDOC POSITION IN SET THEORY IN TORINO (UPDATED) There is an opening for a two year post doc position in set theory in the department of mathematics of Torino university starting july 1st 2013 and finishing june the 30th 2015. The post doc will join the logic group of the department which consists of Matteo Viale, Alessandro Andretta, Raphael Carroy (set theory), Domenico Zambella (model theory), Riccardo Camerlo (Torino polytechnical university - set theory). The selection of applicants will be based on an evaluation of the CV, of the publication records, and of their interests of research which must be in set theory. It is possible to file online the applications creating an account on the italian ministry of education website. If you intend to apply write to [email protected] in order to get detailed information on the filing procedure. Applicants can deposit their online registration forms up to the 28th of may 2013. New editorial board: book series Trends in Logic http://www.springer.com/series/6645 The book series Trends in Logic (Springer Verlag) was founded by Prof. Ryszard Wójcicki in the 1990ies and since then has developed into a major book series in logic. It is part of the Studia Logica Library and publishes monographs and thematically coherent volumes dealing with important developments in formal logic. The series is open to contributions devoted to topics ranging from algebraic logic, model theory, proof theory, philosophical logic, non-classical logic, and logic in computer science to mathematical linguistics and formal epistemology. Trends in Logic now has a new and expanded editorial board and invites the submission of excellent monographs and edited volumes. Submissions may be sent to the new editor-in-chief, Heinrich Wansing, any other member of the editorial board, or the publisher. For further information see http://www.springer.com/series/6645 ******************************************************** 9. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Advances in Cognitive Systems Journal http://www.cogsys.org/instructions/ Advances in Cognitive Systems (http://www.cogsys.org/) is a new electronic journal, now in its second year, that publishes contributions in the original spirit of AI, which aimed to explain the mind in computational terms and reproduce the entire range of human cognition in computational artifacts. Advances in Cognitive Systems is associated with an annual conference of the same name, the first instance of which took place last December. The second volume of the journal served as the electronic proceedings of that meeting. I am writing to tell about a new policy that alters the relationship between journal and conference slightly: - Authors are still welcome to submit papers for publication either to the electronic journal or to the annual conference. - If a journal submission (16 pages) is received at least one month before the conference deadline and is accepted for publication, its authors will be invited to present a talk at the conference. - If a long submission (16 pages) to the conference is accepted for presentation at the meeting, it may either be included in the annual proceedings or be invited to appear in the journal. - If a short submission (8 pages) to the conference is accepted for presentation at the meeting, it will be included in the annual proceedings but not in the journal. This policy should spread submissions across the year, giving more flexibility to authors and reducing the load on reviewers while letting more researchers present their results at the conference. You can find more details at http://www.cogsys.org/instructions/ and in the call for papers to the Annual Conference on Advances in Cognitive Systems, which should be available shortly.
