This is cool, but the lag would suck. I thought there was a better solution for this "barrier", it's actuators which are worn as clothes and shoes, so that they can have higher resolution and minimum latency.
The design is obvious: a grid of "pins" which can be pushed to the skin, possible glided a bit.
