'ello, this is cross posted because I am not in the mood to write two slightly different articles.

In order to eliminate any confusion, here is my near-term top level goal:

-> Develop a machine super-intelligence.

And, for the sake of completeness, my long-term goal is to become a cyborg, in the physical universe, with characteristics similar to those I describe in my writings. My plan for the next million calendar/wall-clock years is to enjoy that body. It should be noted that my cyborg species has a considerable variety of physical configurations I have not yet decided which of those I will actually make use of.

Now what's prompting me to write this post? Like any conscientious person, I need to periodically re-evaluate my strategies for reaching my near and long term goals. Especially while reading Eliasmith, I'm gaining a non-negligible amount of [over]confidence that I actually have a viable approach to solving AGI. This means that I urgently need to disabuse myself of that over-confidence by means of the Real World (tm).

So, five years ago, I started sketching out a robotics lab. At first I wanted to use a robotic arm in a constructed room. Then the NAO came out and so that's my current target. My hardware budget for this project is around $40,000. I have been struggling with unemployment but, even still, I have roughly $12,000 in savings for that project. Things are getting really urgent here so I need to find a way to get past my financial difficulties.

The other approach to this problem, of course, is to use a VR environment. The ZeroState list has a substantial number of people who want to/believe that it is inevitable that they will live out many billions of years of subjective experience in VR. I somehow got it in my head that they would be willing to actually lift a finger to construct such a VR... I was wrong. =(

Meanwhile, in the real world, progress is moving forward, have a look at this upcoming game: http://www.botcolony.com/game/technology/
It uses speech recognition and NLP as it's user interface!

I simply don't have the resources to even bootstrap a VR environment myself. My programming knowledge just doesn't extend into Javascript and web client-end technologies. =( Furthermore, developing a VR sucks massive amounts of time away from what I need to develop the AGI, which is what I really need.

It looks like I'll need a few million dollars to get this bootstrapped, which means I will need a business plan... But then I want the entire thing to be open source.... =\

It looks like Kickstarter is my next stop; get some trained monkeys to do the VR for me. =P
