Jade O'Neill pointed out to me this interesting paper

http://www.buzsakilab.com/content/PDFs/Buzsaki_Moser_NN2013.pdf

which discusses "how planning and episodic memory (and versatile knowledge
representations) could be created out of the spatial/navigation system
in a brain" ...

This reminded me of Shujing Ke's planner which was recently written
for OpenCog, which subsumes navigation into a more general
hierarchical planning process (unlike most game AI navigation engines
that are specialized only for navigation)
