For anyone interested in installing OpenCog see the following email to the
OpenCog list from David Hart who helps w/ system packaging and other
dev-ops stuff for OpenCog

Note that OpenCog is still a research-grade system and doesn't do anything
particularly useful once you download it, though it's capable of providing
value upon appropriate integration into various applications, after doing a
lot of work.... And help w/ OpenCog-based AGI R&D is of course always
appreciated ;)

New CogBuntu images are in the works in a few forms. I believe the
recommended way to install OpenCog dependencies should remain using the
ocpkg script on a stock install of Ubuntu LTS. Instructions are at
http://wiki.opencog.org/w/Ocpkg. Virtual machine instructions are at:

http://wiki.opencog.org/w/Building_OpenCog_on_Mac_OS_X
http://wiki.opencog.org/w/Building_OpenCog_on_Windows

The CogBuntu images for the AGI Summer School 2013 and for the iCog Labs
PCs were built using ocpkg. The script has kept up with dependency changes
and updates necessary for Ubuntu 14.04, but the process of finalizing ISO
images and writing them to media can be fussy (Alex can attest to this!)
Some final testing is still required to build these new ISO images.

When Ubuntu 14.04 is released later this month, ocpkg will change its home
to opencog/scripts/ocpkg, with Ubuntu 12.04 installs and updates using the
old location at https://github.com/opencog/ocpkg. I'll continue to support
updates to the Ubuntu 12.04 version for as long as practical.

For anyone wishing to test the Ubuntu 14.04 version of ocpkg, it's at
https://github.com/githart/opencog/blob/trusty/scripts/ocpkg. A beta
version of Ubuntu 14.04 can be downloaded from the links at
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2014-March/000181.html or
via Docker using the command 'docker importhttp://cdimage.ubuntu.com/
ubuntu-core/daily/current/trusty-core-amd64.tar.gz $USER/trusty'. Any
installation of a beta version of Ubuntu can be upgraded in-place to the
final version.

For anyone wishing to test a Docker image, the Ubuntu 12.04 image is
downloadable using 'docker pull dhart/opencog-cogserver' and the Ubuntu
14.04 image is buildable usinghttps://github.com/githart/
opencog/blob/trusty/Dockerfile.

Docker images are a popular alternative to ISO images that use Linux
Containers (LXC) rather than virtual machines. Anyone can run 'docker push'
as easily as 'git push' to backup an entire development environment. Docker
containers can also run inside of traditional Linux VMs. Either way, using
Docker greatly reduces the risk of a developer losing days or weeks of
productivity because of, say, a crashed machine or an otherwise damaged
development environment.

For anyone wishing to use Ubuntu 14.04 as a primary development
environment, all of the official remixes with different desktop
environments are are supported, including Kylin (中文用户的Ubuntu衍生版 本), KDE,
and GNOME, plus unofficial ones like MATE (the DE popularized by Linux
Mint). All of these DEs are available as packages in the archive, so it's
not necessary to download special ISOs or other installers. Package names
include kubuntu-desktop, gnome, mate-desktop, ubuntukylin-default-settings.
Drop me note with any questions.
