quite peculiar this haptic exchange, since it does not seem related to the
OP. Anyway, quite shocking the answer! Shall we expect colorblind, deaf
people, or even paralyzed ones that have haptic and motoric difficulties
not to exhibit human-like intelligence? And that coming from Ben who sees
value in "amodal" mathematical AGI work. Well, from a robotics perspective
it would be sad to miss on haptic input, however workarounds will be found
after interaction with the real world (perhaps as poor categories as
"fragile", "slippery" etc after failed attempts to hold on to water, eggs,
smooth metal), and it will all be very much human-like. It is worth noting
that I sympathize with the idea that the brain "evolved" to control the
body rather than to write poetry, and in that context it has more
evolutionary significance to move and position oneself correctly for the
three Fs of biology, cooperate with others to kill animals/humans etc, and
it is of a rather secondary significance to distinguish between leather and
velvet, or whatever else haptic does for us. To rephrase, what makes us
humanly intelligent is that we solve human space-time problems as we see
and perceive them, rather than as we touch them.
