I think it is pretty rare for self-published books to get very far. Of course it depends whose book it IS.... I think it is true, though, that mainstream books often contain errors (this isn't a knock against ANYONE in particular). Just about every book published now seems to have one f-up or another. I've been trying to read Penrose's complete guide to reality and it has a few sentences which don't work!
