I agree that the complex adaptive systems approach does not seem right for AI / AGI because the complicatedness of intelligence seems to have something to do with the varieties of special relations between different kinds of events and objects in the real world and the world of ideas and not derived directly from the basis of a relatively simple complex adaptive system. However, can I start to imagine a swarm of agents of intelligence that would be different than those that I have seen discussed? The answer is yes. This doesn't constitute evidence but it does convince me that the possibilities have not been explored very thoroughly. The swarm of agents of intelligence that I have in mind would not all be based on one simple idea but would have to be built up through trial and error so that they created a useful system.
So, while I tend to agree with the point of view that Ben expressed, I cannot say that I am sure of it. The other question that seems relevant to my special interest is whether or not an efficient SAT solver would be useful to AI or AGI. The issues seem similar on casual inspection but I think that there are some very special qualities about logical satisfiabitily. The SAT problem is a form of meta formulas that are not all specified. While the basic SAT problem does specify the logical relations between logical variables the fact is that the logical relations could also be treated as logical Satisfiability variables as well. This may not be useful for theoretical work but it might be useful for exploring ways to represent relations between objects or events. So then one might go further and consider something like an AI satisfiabiity problem which would be based on previously acquired knowledge about how the world is supposed to work.
