If you study the historical roots of the belief that the pineal gland is the part of the brain which is associated with the soul you will find that it was ascribed as such as a means of appeasing the church. By ascribing the soul/body interaction to the minuscule pineal gland, the remainder of the brain was opened for research free from religious persecution.
