You have to update these arguments when using Chernobyl as an example with the
effects from the Fukushima nuclear disaster where the total death count may be
in the millions when fully calculated. This has been largely covered up over
the past few years by government agencies and media. The same may occur IMO at
some point with an AI disaster or perhaps has already occurred...

With AI/AGI the existential threat is enormous unfortunately. It all depends on
how you look at it. IMO automobiles (machines) are mainly responsible for
already destroying much of the Earth's environment as well as other natural
systemic assets. But most people see autos as being something of the opposite.
Autos ("auto"-mobiles) are and have been for a long time a form of machine AI.
The Amish people who live near me in upstate NY often seem very content and
wholehearted in their horse buggies compared to many of my technologically
contemporary associates... though that's just a subjective in jest comment I'm
making.

But a good example for the failure of the precautionary principle is in the
overuse of antibiotics leading to the current imminent existential threat of
antibiotic resistant bacteria. Irrational fear of bacteria may hasten our
demise.

The fear though is (for some reason) compelling. Zombies. The proliferation of
zombies in our culture. Zombies have less intelligence, it has been taken away,
and it might happen to you if you too get bit!
