Some people feel uneasy about trying to take reality and break it up
into pieces - since everything is all part of the seemless web of the
cosmos.

But thinking of everything as one is too hard so we need to be able to
modularise reality to make it tractable.

Traditionally we have done this by using boundary logic. But this can
reify into a sense of separation.

Another way to handle the issue is to use foci logic (with no sharp
edges).

In this case we can recognise self as a focus or node in a web and
others represent other foci or nodes in the web.

For ethics the self node is recognised as having its own goals and
hence needs, while others are also seen as bundles or concentrations
of goals and needs.

(This focus and boundaries idea is part of a bigger concept of
opportunity multiplying that I've pulled together over the years (
an opportunity generating and problem solving philosophy) - see:

http://www.green-innovations.asn.au/opmult.htm

This philosophy might be a useful part of the traiing program for an
AGI.

Cheers, Philip
