Following the links to the people who are running this I found a whole bunch of academic AI people who are interested in and working on general intelligence. Their approach seems to be very much based around the idea that powerful systems for vision, sound, speech, motor skills and so on form the basis for general intelligence.
Somehow I'd managed to miss seeing these people and their projects in the past. For example:
