Ben, I could well be wrong on this, but I think your idea of spirtual joy being a universal emotion (ie. likely to arise in any advanced GI [biological or artificial]) is highly *unlikely* to turn out to be correct.
I think the human experience of "oneness with the universe" giving rise to joy (spiritual joy) is most likely because humans are social beings and there is often survival value in being 'in tune with' peers, parents, group elders or the tribe. My guess is that this mechanism has been extended in the case of human religious experience to be used to handle the sense of oneness with entities larger than peers/parents/elders/tribe - so if we believe in metaphysical entities we can tap the same mind architecture. I think you are now so tuned into "(voluntary) joyous growth" as you own preferred AGI goal structure that you are now projecting this onto all AGIs. I can't see why AGIs would automatically have an interest in being in tune with "the universe" unless this goal is built in directly or it is an emergent goal from some quite particular goals - and so I can't see why spiritual joy arising from being in tune with the universe would be a universal AGI experience.
