One problem with discussing emotion is defining exactly what it means. In my use, it is closely associated with the values that reinforce learning of behaviors, in which case it is pretty essential to mind. This is how several neuroscientists use the word. For example, in A Universe of Consciousness, Gerald Edelman and Giulio Tononi say "Value systems and emotions are essential to the selectional workings of the brain that underlie consciousness." I think Francis Crick has written that "emotion motivates behavior", although I cannot find the reference.
