Peter,

50GB is a lot of RAM but not much for a hard drive. I'm currently using
500GB firewire 800 (faster than firewire 400) external drives and find them
as fast as internal drives. I don't have actual transfer rate comparisons
but if you can afford it, RAM would definitely be the best. As a rough price
comparison I believe RAM is running roughly $300/GB while the firewire 800
drives are less than $2/GB. Cached RAID internal drives are probably in the
same ballpark as the firewire drives, the only disadvantage being that they
are not portable, which may not be a concern for you. I have used 9GB (4.7GB
on each side) RAM disks and they are much slower than the firewire drives.

I know this reply is rough but if you'd like more info I'll be glad to
supply it.

Thanks,
Earl

Subject: [agi] SOTA 50 GB memory for Windows

What are the best options for large amounts of fast memory for Windows-based
systems?

I'm looking for price & performance (access time) for:

1) Cached RAID
2) RAM disks
3) Internal RAM (using 64 bit architecture?)
4) other

Thanks for any info.
