IMO it is not sensible to speak of "the present approach to AI"

There are a lot of approaches out there... not an orthodoxy by any means...

I'm aware of the different approaches, and of how very, very different they are from one another.

But by contrast with the approach I am advocating, they all look like "orthodoxy". There is a *big* difference between the two sets of ideas.

In that context, and only in that context, it makes sense to talk about "the present approach to AI".
