Why not?
Because "public domain" offers NO protection. If you want something close to what public domain used to provide, then the MIT license is a good choice. If you make something public domain, you are opening yourself to abusive lawsuits. (Those are always a possibility, but a license that disclaims responsibility offers *some* protection.)

Public domain used to be a good choice (for some purposes), before lawsuits became quite so pernicious.
