Only if we apply our human bias toward anthropomorphism do we think that
machines cannot do what humans cannot.  An AI not "understand" a book any more
than a thermostat "wants" to keep the room at a constant temperature.  But
that does not stop you from programming a machine to *appear* to understand a
book after reading it in one second.
