What if you discover a sub-stratum alternate-universe thingy that you beleive will be better, but it requires the destruction of this universe to create? What if you discover that there is a god, and that this universe is a kind of cancer or illness in god? (Disclaimer: I did not come up with this; its from some sci-fi book I read as a teen.)
