Split seems reasonable to me. Right now this is the closest there is to a venue specifically for AGI engineering, whereas there are other places to discuss AGI philosophy. (For example, AGI philosophy would presumably be on topic for extropy-chat.)
As for the suggestions that we regress to the primitive and impoverished web forum medium, the ideal would be a system that provides both a mailing list and forum interfaces, so that each subscriber can choose his preferred interface.
