Problem is that story has milestone attribute disabled for view by default. When you assigned sprint to story milestone was added automaticly. Try to enable milestone attribute for story in Admin- >Types->Story, open the story and change milestone to empty value.
When milestone and story are empty, item should reappear in backlog.
