This is a shortcoming, but we expected not many people would be using 
children on tasks. What kind of tickets do you attach to a task?

I did not even know this is even possible. How do you disable the help 
button (and again, why)?

Well, not quite. You should be able to add custom top level types 
(Impediments, Epics) and configure them to have stories or similar as 
top level types and the backlog should render them correctly. The only 
limitations are that every type must eventually be "linkable" to a task-
like in order to appear in a backlog and that task-like tickets must be 
leaves.
