I can't answer your question directly, but I had the same behavior on my system (and posted about it in the thread entitled Backlog hung during animated loading graphic). I was able to get more detail on what the exact problem was by installing the Firebug Firefox extension and enabling it's debug console. The debug console showed an exception was occurring during the load of the backlog page and even gave me enough detail to find the ticket that was causing the problem.
