Actually this is a know limitation (that we are planning to remove)
and you cannot see custom types in the backlog unless they are
task-like (i.e. they have a time_remaining field) or they are linked
to some other type already shown in the backlog:

Technically, you can change the ticket type. But be advised that due to 
some API limitations, behavior of that ticket may be inconsistent 
afterwards. The reason for this is that changing a ticket does not 
properly clean the field values the ticket had. For example, if you have 
change a Task (that can have a Sprint) into a Requirement (that cannot 
have a sprint), any task that had a sprint set will still (invisibly) 
have a sprint value, and e.g. will not show up in global backlogs.
This is not only limited to type changes (which would be easy to fix), 
but also field changes (that can added/removed via the ini file).

Given that, if you keep ticket types "similar" (same set of fields), 
changing a type is not an issue.
