Kelly:
If you want to know what each sound means or stands for, my suggestion is to
find the "sounds" folder in your audio quake directory (It's usually in the
"ID1" folder," and manually playing each one and comparing it with its name
to see what it's associated with. For example, if you play a sound file
called "corner.wav," and you hear that turn-signal type sound, you now know
that this is what it sounds like when you come to a corner. Slip gates, the
platform you were looking for, is denoted by a sort of "wind in rocks,"
noise. Think of air rushing between a pressure differential caused by a
teleportation wormhole... Hope this helps; let me know if I can help
further.

Subject: [AGRIP-discuss] Getting Started with AudioQuake
Hi,
I started playing AudioQuake on my laptop this evening, and so far am
impressed with the quality of the sounds. However, one thing that's really
annoying me, and this is probably because I haven't entirely read through
the manual or figured out the controls yet, is that while playing one of
the tutorial maps, I heard a message like "Stand on the platform to
proceed". When this happened, my first thought was "What platform? I
didn't know there was one here, and where exactly is it?"
Similarly, when I decided to jump right into the game (I was impatient
this evening, I'll admit), I heard "Enter the slip gate to start playing
Quake." My thought was "OK, where's the gate?"
Personally, I wish the tutorials could give more information for the
beginner, such as telling you what to press in certain situations.
Alternatively, it would be nice if there was a "sound index" feature where
you could find out what a particular sound represents. In the meantime,
can anyone give me any hints on how to get started with the game?
Thanks.
Yours Sincerely,
Kelly John Sapergia
