One of the goals of our project was to provide a system for you to track
your statistics online. This means that you'd use the Stats and Servers
website to find public servers, log into a server by means of your
personal username and password and then be able to track your
performance on the Stats and Servers website after playing.

As many of you know, this goal hasn't yet been fully met, as people can
easily set their player name to be the same as yours and pollute the
statistics. It also had limited support for different gametypes.

We've been doing two things behind the scenes to try to improve this
situation and have got far enough with them to tell you about them.
Firstly we've upgraded the Stats and Servers site somewhat. In the
future this should mean better support for keeping your frags to
yourself; you'll be able to sign up and register a player name as your
own. Then, when playing on servers that support the MAUTH protocol
(which will be available with the next release of the game, the
unbelievably long-time-coming 0.3.0) you'll need to log in as yourself
before being able to play. It will still be possible to run servers
that don't contribute to global stats, but taking part is encouraged.

It will also be possible for you to set up your own stats system for
running LAN parties, competitions and so on. There are a number of
improvements to the new site yet to be made that will make it easier to
package up and deploy on other machines, but these are minor in relation
to the big changes that have gone in to make this new version possible.

Please note that because the data is currently untrustable (as people
have not been able to keep their names, or have changed names a lot) it
will be wiped before the 0.3.0 release. We may then go through a short
test period just before the release and see how well it works before
making the final tweaks and getting 0.3.0 out at long last.

The way that the system works will of course be documented (almost all
of the development manual is now done) and will be Open Sourced so you
can benefit from it. When we put AudioQuake fully into your hands and
cease to make new developmental releases, we'd love to see you taking
advantage of this!

We hope that these changes will help you enjoy the game and maybe
develop web applications based on the existing system. Please bear in
mind that it will be some weeks before they're all implemented and
there's no point in signing up to the site yet as the required servers
and clients have not been released (but are now in testing).

As things progress we'll keep you updated. It is not currently certain
how long it'll be before a release can be made but you're welcome to
check out what is live of the new Stats and Servers site in the
meantime, at http://stats.agrip.org.uk/ . Feedback is, as ever, very
welcome!

best regards,
