Yesterday I found and downloaded the upgrade files for XP, both with and
without SAPI5 installation. After removing the AudioQuake folder from my hard
drive, I installed first one, then the other, with the same results: Neither
clicking on the created desktop shortcut, nor going to the program folder
itself and clicking on q95.bat or quake.exe launched the program. With my
screen-reader on, I tried launching again, and heard something about
"f:\windows\system32.exe," But it either flashed too fast to be captured, or
that was all there was. In every case, the program did not launch, nor talk,
and returned simply went away.

After that, still not finding SAPI5 in my control panel or programs folders, I
found and installed it successfully from an independent source. I proved to
myself that it was satisfactorily installed, through Control Panel. Again,
after deleting the existing AudioQuake folder, I attempted to reinstall.
Again, I got the same results--without my screenreader, it didn't launch; with
my screen-reader, it flashed something about "system32.exe," and then simply
went away.
At this point, I'm baffled. Everything else on the system runs fine. When I
attempted to replace the older version of Quake, it didn't work either, with
the same results. Can someone suggest what might be causing this?
Thanks.
