Hi James, I am running mac os tiger on a macbook pro, and have heard about X11 being installed on Leopard by default as well, but am not sure if it is true. However you definitely need to install x11 on tiger if you just did a default install of the os. Concerning your first question, I think you need to install macports, following all the instructions (including the one about seting the path correctly), and then you need to get wget (port install wget), and if you want to compile your own source code you need bzr (type port install bzr to get this). Assuming your path is set up you should then be able to run the installer, as you have already added execute permissions.
I also encountered a problem with my perl installation, where I had to install a missing module, although I think Matthew may be working on fixing this. Hope this helps, Adam.
