Well, after a step back and trying the zquake binary, noting that the
server compiles but the clients didn't, I re-examined the output of
"make help" and found the problem. The software rendering version
wasn't supposed to, this Matt was kind enough to tell me a long time
ago, and it's the sdl option I wanted. The glsdl option didn't work
either, but I am happy with just the sdl as that is what I'd use
anyway, though I may come back to that one in future.
I still have a curiosity I'm trying to sort out, but I'll fight with it
a little longer and write back later.
