Well, hey there Mark: I can't help with the mac questions, but I can help a little with the mauth question. If you're running a server when you start the zqds program you'd type:
zqds -nomauth 'enter'
If someone else is running the server you're playing on they'll type that.
Now as for for disabling it in the client, in the start.pl file where the options for the various zquake binaries. Just look for the one that includes the -nomouse option. You'd just add -nomauth to the options that are there already. I've not seen the one for the mac but I'm sure that it's the last one before the line refering to the game dir option. Hope that helps some. Just so ya know though you probably already do, you'll want to have the maps sounds etc that will be on the server already on your computer as the latest version won't download them even if it's set to do so, which in the client it is, if only I knew what was causing that...
Take care...
Cheereo!
