AI-GEOSTATS: regression analysis

Dear members,

I'm looking for information about statistical test on regression analysis.

My problem, actually, is to decide which one between some regression functions is the most statistically reliable.
In particular, I have to compare a linear regression (Y=aX+b) with a non linear one Y = a/(X^2 + b). What have I to analyse to make a choice among them? Residuals? Is there any objective criterion to decide?

For linear regression I know the existence of many tests (like F ratio, t Student and other), but nothing about non linear ones.
Could You suggest me any reference about this problem (better if downloadable from the web)?
