Graduate Assistantship (M.S.) in Landscape Ecology

Spatial Modeling of Mercury Emissions

University of Nevada – Reno, Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Science, Landscape Ecology Lab (http://www.cabnr.unr.edu/weisberg/index.htm).

A graduate research assistantship is available starting Fall 2004. The student may pursue an M.S. degree in either Natural Resources and Environmental Science (http://www.ag.unr.edu/nres/Graduates/index.htm/), or in Environmental Sciences and Health (http://www.unr.edu/idgrad/esh/). The goal of the research project is to scale up field-based measurements of mercury emissions to statewide and, ultimately, national scales. This work represents the synthesis stage of a large, interdisciplinary project funded by the U.S. EPA STAR program on the biogeochemistry of mercury.

Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in a relevant scientific discipline, with strong quantitative skills, computer skills, and a background in GIS applications. Previous experience in geostatistical analysis and/or remote sensing would be desirable. Coursework in biogeochemistry is also desirable. Minimum requirements are a GPA of 3.2 and a combined GRE score of 1200.

The assistantship includes a starting salary of $1300/ month, pays health insurance benefits, and covers the cost of tuition. Additional information on graduate study at the University of Nevada - Reno can be found at: http://www.vpr.unr.edu/grad2/. Additional information on the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Science can be found at: http://www.ag.unr.edu/ers/Default.htm. The student will work with Dr. Peter Weisberg, who is a landscape ecologist (www.ag.unr.edu/nres/Directory/Weisberg.htm), and Dr. Mae Gustin, a geochemist with a research program that focuses on Hg biogeochemistry (www.unr.ag.edu/gustin)

The following materials are needed to apply: (1) Letter of Intent describing background and career goals, (2) resume or CV, (3) college transcripts (unofficial copies are acceptable), (4) GRE scores (unofficial copies acceptable), and (5) three letters of reference.
